A review

DanceSport’s first annual Prom Night Student Showcase on Thursday April 23rd was a smashing success replete with all the pomp & circumstance befitting New York’s Largest Ballroom & Latin Dance Studio.

Upon entering the ballroom attendees were presented with their choice of Yellow, Red, Pink, or Orange corsages and boutonnieres. From here they would have their Pictures taken in our Photo staging area, complete with colorful balloon pillars and backdrop.

The evening commenced with a Pre-Party Class in Foxtrot and Swing taught by Maranda. After the dance class, and some general dancing, a parade of the nominees for prom King and Queen marched to the beat of a Paso Doble and were cheered on by friends, family, students, and instructors. Throughout the evening Managing Director Steven Hughes would challenge these candidates for royalty to a series of amusing Jack and Jill contests testing not merely their knowledge of dance but more importantly their stamina and dexterity! The early challenge of “dancing” musical chairs never gave away the fun the audience would have in watching these couples, in future challenges, attempt to maintain composure while having to maneuver a Foxtrot in the reverse line of dance or switch leads during a Cha Cha. But it was the final challenge of having to dance a Rumba, Samba , and Swing on a newspaper that continued to be folded in half, that truly separated the men from the boys, or shall we say the Princes and Princesses from the Kings and the Queens.

Master of Ceremonies Gregory Peden kept the energy high during the student showcase performances with students such as Angela Jensen, Ashley Pereira, Ashlea Bonds, Deborah Dzobzinski, Deepinder Sahi, and Victoria Codru all performing with their instructors for the first time. Judging from the cheers in the crowd we will likely be seeing more of these students in future showcases and competitions as they continue to improve and impress! Other students who are veterans of comps and showcases such as Michele Fischer, who could have been named queen of costume changes, wowed us with a variety of styles from her sexy swing routine with Maranda to a distinguished American Waltz/Foxtrot with Rainer. Elizabeth Smith was glorious in a medley of dances with her instructor Franklin and Edissa Tianchon danced an elegant International Style Waltz with Rainer. Our beloved Kosta also ignited the crowd with an exciting Cha Cha Routine with his student Alexis Weinberg who won the Best Technique Award at our Best of ’08 Student Showcase, and a glorious Open Gold Samba/Rumba with his student Ramona Kistler.

At festivities end David Waintraub and Angela Jensen were crowned royalty and showed off robes and tiara’s as they danced among the crowd for one of the many general dancing sets. If a picture is worth a thousand words then the Prom Night Photo station that DanceSport had set up all evening to capture the joyous memories will have us all be “Forever Young.”
