President / Instructor
But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great.
Paul Pellicoro began his illustrious career as an athlete and artist. He trained in modern and ballet before finding the right fit in the Ballroom and Latin Dance arena. His inspiration came in the 1970’s as a New York Hustle street dancer. From there he continued his professional training in International Style (ISTD) as well as American Style dancing. He is one of the few experts in the varied authentic styles that he himself helped bring back into fashion. The genres and trends he crusaded for include Argentine Tango, NY Palladium style Mambo “On 2”, and of course the Hustle.
In the late1980’s Paul and his partner Eleny Fotinos competed in International Style Ballroom (Standard) and Latin-American Style distinguishing them as 10 Dance competitors. They were Rising Star Champions in the Latin American style.
In 1985 he opened the doors to his own studio. It occupied three large floors in a famous dance building at Columbus Circle. Paul and his DanceSport studio became instrumental players in the renaissance of partner dancing in New York City which set the trend for every major city throughout the world. Paul Pellicoro’s DanceSport became New York’s Largest Ballroom & Latin Dance Studio and eventually outgrew its old space at Columbus Circle and moved in November 2006 to its larger newly renovated facility at 22 W. 34th Street adjacent to the famed Empire State Building. Most recently the Studio continues operations at the latest location 230 W 39th St. Set to incorporate both a fabulous semi-sprung hardwood floor on the 2nd floor as well as occasional event space and cafe/lounge area on the first floor.
Paul is proud of the fact that DanceSport was the first studio in North America to offer authentic Argentine Tango classes after he sought out the esteemed professionals of what was at the time the hottest ticket on Broadway, Tango Argentino, and worked with them and many other Argentine masters to develop a Tango department that would train dancers in the style of Argentine Tango commonly found in the salons and in the theaters of Buenos Aires. To date no studio has come close to offering the quality and broad curriculum that DanceSport maintains and still offers today.
Paul is also a published author having written the definitive book on Argentine Tango appropriately called “Paul Pellicoro on Tango” published by Barricade Books.
He also is well known as the choreographer and the man who taught Al Pacino the tango sequence in the award winning film “Scent of a Woman”. Some other of Paul’s distinguished work in film also includes “The Object of My Affection”, “Summer of Sam”, and “Flawless” with Robert De Niro. In addition, Paul is a professional adjudicator and he is certified by the Imperial Society of Dances (London).
